Frequently asked Questions

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you can't find the answer to your questions here

Q - What are the surrounds made of?

A - All of our surrounds, hearths chamber tiles & slips are made from A1 fire-rated high-density reconstituted stone. They are cement based & fibre reinforced so are far more durable than natural stone or gypsum. We only use natural aggregates & no artificial pigments to achieve our naturalistic colours. Polymers, fibres & other chemicals are added at  ratios similar to that used in polished concrete manufacture.

Q - Do you have a showroom I can visit?

A - Yes.....of sorts. We are primarily a manufacturer that sells direct to the public at trade prices via our on-line shop, however we do have a unique display area in our Yard that you can visit by appointment. Please get in touch by email to do so.

Q - Are they suitable for wood burning stoves & HETAS approved?

A - Yes, they are suitable for use with wood burning stoves because they are non-combustible, HETAS only regulates the stove installation but building regulations state that surrounds & lintels must be non-combustible. EN 13501-1:2007-A1:2009 specifies the method of fire classification for construction products and building elements. Materials that are classified as A1 are non-combustible and satisfy the requirements of all other classifications. Concrete with fibre reinforcement of less than 1% is classified as combustibility Class A1 & requires no other certification. However if you are intending to have an open fire we would recommend using a granite inner hearth.

Q - None of the surrounds fit my fireplace opening exactly, can they be customised?

A - Yes, all of our surrounds can be raised or lowered & our Grande version can even be reduced in width too! We also can supply slips to reduce the fire opening. Please send us your measurements for a bespoke quotation, we can even send  a scale CAD drawing for you to check before you order!

Q - Do you supply matching Hearths & Chamber Sets?

A - Yes we can supply colour matched hearth slabs & chamber tiles in standardised  sizes that can can easily be cut by the fitter with an angle grinder fitted with a diamond cutting blade.

Q - Can you supply my hearth in 1 piece?

A - No, for two good reasons traditionally fire hearths were never fitted in one piece because of thermal expansion & the risk of cracking, secondly they cannot be transported safely on a pallet. We always recommend 3 slabs for an outer hearth & 2 for an inner.

Q - Do the surrounds come in 1 piece (ready assembled)?

A - No, they will arrive on a pallet or pallets in several pieces & will need to be "built" rather than screwed to a wall. Please note that the mantles in particular can weigh up to 50kg so are a 2 person lift.

Q - How difficult are they to fit?

A - Most builders & competent DIY'ers will manage just fine by following our downloadable instructions (follow the links on the header). All Brackets & fittings  are cast into each components, but plugs, screws, adhesive & grout etc are not. These are built rather than dry assembled & because the originals were handmade please expect them to be uneven by a few mm's in places, but this can easily be accommodated within a 3 to 5mm mortar or adhesive joint. These are not crisp flat characterless machine made fireplaces & are rustic in character just like the beautiful antique originals from which the moulds are taken. If you need to discuss in detail then simply request a call back by email.

Q - How quickly can I receive my order?

A - Typically 4 weeks but this may increase at busy times, all of our surrounds are made to order & they need a minimum of 3 weeks curing time before dispatch. We do keep limited stock & will contact you if we can dispatch sooner. If you need a fireplace urgently then please do email us to check our current stock levels.

Q - How does the delivery charge work?

A - You will be charged a flat fee of £85 per pallet at our checkout, this amount is sufficient for most of our customers, however depending on your postcode you may be contacted for additional costs. For example the Isle of Mann would cost £210 per pallet & some areas of London are typically £105 per pallet. If you are unhappy with the additional costs & cannot collect or arrange your own collection then you will be refunded minus a 1.5% handling fee.

Q - Why is a 1.5% handling fee charged for on-line payments?

A - We are charged 1.5% plus monthly fee's for our on-line shop so have chosen to show how we recuperate some of this cost rather than add it to our prices.

Q - Are there any other ways to pay?

A - Yes, we are happy to accept bank transfer & only require 50% deposit to begin production of your order. The remaining balance will be required before dispatch can be arranged. We also accept cash on collection.
